What Is The IELTS?

So far, you already know what IELTS course (คอร์ส เรียน ielts which is the term in Thai) is and what its types are. However, we have not told you about the most important thing: what is the test to present the IELTS?

Before explaining each component, keep in mind that the test has a maximum duration of 2:45 minutes, where you must develop each of the four skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking. Do you want to know what each one consists of? Could you take a look at our explanation?

Listening

In this part of the exam, you have 30 minutes to solve the questions. In general, it is divided into four recordings of native speakers:

  • Recording 1: a usual conversation between two people in a social context.
  • Recording 2: a monologue that takes place in an everyday social context.
  • Recording 3: a group conversation in an educational context.
  • Recording 4: a monologue that takes place in an educational context.

It does not matter if you will take the IELTS Academic or General Training, this part of the test is the same for both types of exams.

Reading

In this component of the IELTS, you have 60 minutes to answer all the questions. What does it consist of? You will find 40 questions that will assess your reading skills. However, here differences are depending on the type of IELTS you are going to present.

IELTS Academic

You will come across three long texts that include diagrams, graphs, and illustrations. The texts may be discursive, descriptive, analytical, or scientific and factual (they are based on the facts).

IELTS General Training

The reading of three texts will also be carried out, but the contents will be about daily activities. You can find advertising articles, magazines, newspapers, business manuals, book chapters, among others.

Writing

As in the Reading section, you have 60 minutes to present the written test. Here there are also differences between the IELTS types:

IELTS Academic

They will ask you to build a text to explain a graph, chart, diagram, or table. The purpose is to summarize the content in your words, and the ideal is at least 150 words. You must write an essay; the subject can vary. This part of the test must have a minimum of 250 words.

IELTS General Training

You must write a letter. The style (formal, informal) will depend on the situation they give you; keep in mind that it has a minimum of 150 words. You will be asked to write a short essay; in this case, it is a less academic and more personal style.

Speaking

This is the final part of the IELTS. Do not be scared because its duration is between 10 to 15 minutes. It is similar for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training; here, the evaluators will ask questions on familiar and familiar topics. The dynamics are as follows:

You will answer questions from your personal life: who do you live with? What do you like to do?

They will give you a card, and you will have to prepare the topic in a minute. Then, you will answer questions related to that specific topic. You can also study IELTS online (เรียน ielts online which is the term in Thai).
